This collection contains letters from President Eisenhower to Governor Shivers, press conference drafts and notes, press conference transcripts, an image of President Eisenhower with Governor Shivers, President Eisenhower’s State of the Union Address from 1956, and correspondence between U.S. Attorney General Herbert Brownell and Robyn Duff Ladino. These items tell the story of the congenial relationship between President Eisenhower and Governor Shivers. This friendly relationship, as well as President Eisenhower’s thoughts on the integration issue, led to his inaction during the Mansfield Crisis.
